Choosing Homeschool Science Curriculum
Mar 26, 2023Psalm 148
"1 Praise the Lord.[a]
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
praise him in the heights above.
2 Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
3 Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all you shining stars.
4 Praise him, you highest heavens
and you waters above the skies.
5 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for at his command they were created,
6 and he established them for ever and ever—
he issued a decree that will never pass away.
7 Praise the Lord from the earth,
you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,
8 lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
stormy winds that do his bidding,
9 you mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
small creatures and flying birds,
11 kings of the earth and all nations,
you princes and all rulers on earth,
12 young men and women,
old men and children.
13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted;
his splendor is above the earth and the heavens.
14 And he has raised up for his people a horn,[b]
the praise of all his faithful servants,
of Israel, the people close to his heart.
Praise the Lord."
When we started homeschooling, we had NO IDEA that the content and curriculum we would teach our kids would have such a profound impact on our faith and our understanding of God's universe. The more our children wanted to learn about snakes, birds, sharks, bugs, weather,...you name it, the more awestruck we became with the created world we live in and how magnificently it is held together. God is truly an awesome God and is worthy of our praise!
As a homeschool parent, you have the unique opportunity to shape your child's worldview from a very young age (and we recommend starting young!). One key aspect of this is choosing curriculum that teaches from a Biblical point of view. When you do so, you help build a strong foundation for apologetics and faith in your child's heart and mind. There really is no other way.
Specifically, when choosing science materials in your homeschool, we think you should DEFINITLEY consider choosing curriculum that is taught from a Biblical point of view, aka, creation science. Creation science is the study of scientific evidence that supports the biblical account of creation. It includes evidence from fields such as geology, biology, astronomy, and physics. By teaching your child about creation science, you help them understand that science and faith are not mutually exclusive, but rather complement each other.
We have put together some reasons that teaching creation science can help build a foundation for apologetics and faith, and we encourage you to explore the information below and see for yourself in the resources mentioned:
- Creation science provides evidence for the existence of God.
The complexity and design of the universe and living organisms point to the existence of an intelligent creator. By teaching your child about the scientific evidence for creation, you can help them see that belief in God is not just a matter of blind faith, but is supported by empirical evidence. Take a look at the human eye. How can anything so complex be put together by chance? God has designed it perfectly so that it lets in or blocks out light, keeps itself lubricated, and works with our brain to see images and colors -- so amazing. Or how about the migration patterns of the Bristle-thighed Curlew and the Short-tailed Shearwater birds who abandon their babies and fly thousands of miles away. Somehow, these abandoned babies will flock together and end up finding the very spot where their parents are residing! The more we have learned about creation over the years, the more it solidifies our belief in an amazing God who has created everything that exists and is holding everything in place. (This information is from Exploring Creation series by Apologia, and we highly recommend it!)
- Creation science helps your child understand the reliability of the Bible.
The Bible is not just a book of moral teachings, but also contains historical and scientific information that can be verified. By teaching your child about the scientific accuracy of the biblical account of creation, you can help them see that the Bible is a reliable source of information. The Bible is a reliable account of events that have happened in human history. Many theories state that the earth is millions or billions of years old, but the Bible supports the idea that the earth is only about 6,000 years old. For instance, the book of Job mentions dinosaurs living right along with man, and scientists have found a T-rex femur with connective tissue, blood vessels, and cells in it! The Bible also recounts the story in Genesis of a flood, which would account for many sea life fossils that are found all over the world well above sea level. Both of these findings support the idea of a young earth, as laid out in the Bible. (Answers in Genesis)* is a wonderful resource to use that helps us understand how the Bible and the history of the world/creation go hand in hand.)
- Creation science equips your child to defend their faith.
As your child grows and interacts with people who hold different beliefs, they will encounter questions and objections to their faith. By teaching them a solid foundation of creation science, you can equip them with the knowledge and tools to defend their beliefs and engage in thoughtful, loving discussions with others. When our children have an answer to questions like how did we get here, how was the earth made, how old is the earth, and what happened to dinosaurs, they need to have a solid answer. Teaching them the history of the world and how it all came to be cements this truth in their minds.
- Creation science fosters awe and wonder at God's creation and creates a deeper sense of purpose.
Studying the complexity and beauty of the natural world can inspire a complete sense of wonder and awe in your child that will deepen as they grow. By teaching them about creation science, you not only can help them appreciate the intricacies of God's handiwork and develop a deeper sense of gratitude and worship, but it demonstrates that God has a purpose in everything. He created the world, and he created people! Our children have been created by God for this time and this place. He has knit them together before they were born and knows how many hairs are on their heads. Teaching that we are all created by God creates a much deeper sense of uniqueness and purpose than believing that we just evolved from a few cells over billions of years and have no purpose or function. This deep truth will make all the difference in their lives.
We hope this overview gives you a sense of why choosing curriculum from a Biblical point of view can be such an integral part of your homeschool and we encourage you to check out the sources listed. By incorporating creation science into your school days, you can help your child develop a solid scientific and spiritual foundation that will serve them well throughout their lives.❤️️
